i. Potassium Chromate
ii. Silver Nitrate (0.1 N)
iii. EDTA (0.02M)
iv. EBT
v. BaCl2 (6.1 %)
vi. HCl (0.1 N)
vii. Ammonia Buffer pH 10
b. Glass wares

i. Conical Flask
ii. Pipettes 10ml
iii. Beaker 100ml
iv. Conical Flasks 300ml
v. China Crucible
c. Instrument

i. pH meter
ii. Hot plate Muffle furnace

d. pH: ( 6.5 – 8.0 )

Check the pH of drinking water according to Procedure of pH meter.

e. Chloride ( NMT 250mg/L)

i. Solution preparation

AgNO3, Dissolve 17.0g of AgNO3 in sufficient water to produce 1000ml.
K2CrO4 Take 5.0g of K2CrO4 in 100ml water.
ii. Procedure

• Take 50ml of sample in a conical flask.
• Add 1ml of Pot. Chromate 5% solution as an indicator.
• Titrate against 0.1N AgNO3, till the brick red colour produced.

Calculation: volume used  35.5  0.1  1000
Volume of sample

f. Total Hardness as CaCO3 ( NMT 500 mg/L, Opt 200 – 250ppm)

i. Solution Preparation.

0.02M EDTA solution Take 7.445g of ethylenediaminetetra acetic acid in 1000 ml volumetric flask add distilled water to make volume 1000 ml.
EBT Dissolve 0.1g of EBT in 100ml of 96% Ethanol.
Ammonia Buffer pH 10 Dissolve 5.4g of ammonium chloride in 20ml of water, and 35ml of 10M ammonia and dilute to 100ml with water.
ii. Procedure

• Take 50ml sample in a conical flask
• Add 1ml of ammonia buffer pH 10.
• Add few drops of EBT, as an indicator.
• Titrate against 0.02M EDTA.
• The colour changes from purple to Blue.

Calculation: Volume used  0.02  100  1000
Volume of sample
g. Sulphates ( NMT 250 mg/L)
i. Solution Preparation.
BaCl2 Dissolve 6.1 g of BaCl2 in sufficient water to produce 100ml.
1.0M HCl Dilute 8.5ml of concentrated HCl to 100 with water.
ii. Procedure

• Take 100ml of sample in titration flask
• Add 5ml of 1.0M HCl and 5ml of BaCl2 6.1% solution.
• Filter with filter paper..
• Put the filter paper in pre-weighed (W1) crucible.
• Ignite at 800 oC in Muffle Furnace.
• Cool and note the final Weight (W2) of the crucible.

Calculation: ( W2 - W1 )  0.4116  1000
Volume of sample

h. Total solids (NMT 1000 mg/L )

i. Filter the sample of drinking water with filter paper.
ii. Take 10ml filtered sample in a pre-weighed (W1) beaker.
iii. Evaporate on hot plate and cool
iv. Note the weight (W2)
Calculation: ( W2 - W1 )  1000
